Violence Prevention & Risk Considerations for CIT Trained Officers and Mental Health Professionals
1.5 hours - Police Officers specifically trained to respond to incidents involving mental health consumers and mental health professionals working with law enforcement agencies face unique challenges in managing crisis-related incidents. Officers and mental health professionals must take the necessary steps to achieve a working knowledge of the Extreme Risk Protection Order Act of 2018, the potential ramifications of the 988 Suicide and Crisis Hotline, and the required responsibilities when dealing with a person incapacitated or intoxicated. When such professionals fail to engage in ongoing self-improvement to better understand these critical areas, they face many risks. Specific case studies will be discussed where the opportunity to identify “red flags” that may have prevented mass violence were missed. Officers will also be encouraged to embrace training they have received in dealing with mental health consumers as a commitment to their profession of helping others and an opportunity to achieve compassion satisfaction.

Target Audience: Police Officers previously trained as CIT Officers, Crisis Negotiators, Officers assigned to Domestic Violence or Juvenile/Family Crisis Units, or any individual assigned the responsibility of investigating or supervising situations involving actions associated with the Extreme Risk Protection Order Act of 2018. This course is also recommended for mental health professionals working with police agencies and Chiefs, Command Staff Members, and Supervisors.
